Permission to reproduce these superb coins was given to me twenty-five years ago by an investor in Mel Fisher's 1715 Fleet salvage project in exchange for my making copies for members of his family. All are legal copies and are so marked. The originals were among the early coins salvaged from the ten ships that went down in a hurricane almost 300 years ago. Coins with this perfection of detail are usually found only in the finest private collections and in museums. The "escudo", the original of which was 22K gold or higher, came in four denominations: the 8-escudo, the 4-escudo, the 2-escudo, and the 1-escudo. The escudo was the legendary gold "doubloon" of pirate lore. It, along with the silver Piece O' Eight, are the two most famous names in shipwreck coin history. Three denominations of the escudo are available in either Sterling Silver, 14K gold, 18K gold, or, like the real thing, in solid 22K gold. The coins are cast in a fitted bezel and have large loops for chains as part of the piece. They may be worn with either side facing toward the front. An original gold doubloon sells for upwards of $12,000.00. These replicas are completely faithful to the originals but are available here at a fraction of the price. It's your chance to buy a "pirate coin" without paying pirate prices. Whitfield Jack |
