Pirates were notorious for intimidating their victims by any means possible when boarding a commandeered ship. Blackbeard reportedly wore flaming sticks of incense in his beard and hair. A drawing of Jean Lafitte the pirate shows him wearing a necklace of human knuckle bones.

Imagine a one-eyed, one-legged pirate with bad breath and his hair on fire sticking Whitfield Jack's Pirate's Ring in your face. You'd do a double half-gainer off the plank.
