Well, not long ago I saw a guy and his wife showing a local friend of mine some kind of bracelet with a key and a big "W" on it, and my friend said, "Does that mean you're driving a Winnebago?" And they said, "Naw, somebody told us this was the symbol of the island." And my local buddy said, "Since when? I was born here on the Rock and so was my father, and so was my grandfather, and so was his father, and that new-fangled thing wrapped around your arm got invented just about yesterday and is about as traditional as a plastic sunset at Mallory Square. "W" could stand for Wichita, or Weasel, or Wart, or Who knows What!" "What are we going to do?" they asked, turning as red as a boiled Florida lobster. And my friend said, "Go ask Whitfield Jack if he'll melt it down and make you a real Key West Conch Bracelet." So they did, and the last time they were seen they were over at Buddy Owen's Fish Wagon drinking beer and eating Square Grouper sandwiches and cussing back and forth at a parrot and hobnobbing with all sorts of pirates and getting took for real live born-and-raised-here-from-scratch Conchs. "Those who wear the Conch," they say, "return to Key West again someday." (And some never leave....they stay.) The Conch is the beloved emblem of Key West, the only island in the Caribbean where the natives themselves are affectionately known as Conchs. The Conch is on their flag! The Conch is on their City Seal! The Conch is in their hearts and souls! Anything else is messing with tradition.
