Display for Blackbeard's Dagger
by Whitfield Jack

The sea fan, found on Rest Beach in Key West after hurricane George, is finished in iridescent azure acrylic paint. A frame of faceted Caribbean-blue topaz in 14K white-gold settings outlines the fan like marquee lights. Four 22K gold starfish march across the pearled ocean floor toward a treasure trove of two natural emerald crystals from the wreck of the Spanish galleon Atocha. A border of 14K pink-gold stone crabs encircles the teakwood base, which is finished with white gold leaf under the pearls and a 24K gold leaf border in front. A giant blue crab covered in white gold leaf climbs up the sea fan. In its claws rests Blackbeard's Dagger. Not shown: three 18K gold plaques stating the name of the piece, the owner, the designer, and the date and place of manufacture are affixed on the front gold border. The display stands 17" tall.
