According to Wikipedia,
contemporary sources say that Blackbeard flew two flags: One
black with a white skull. One the color of blood.
The image above
gives you a fearful idea of what you might see when Blackbeard
the Pirate was bearing down upon you, the bow of a galleon like
this crowded with a crew waving swords and shooting pistols into
the air, and Backbeard himself, shouting curses from the top
of the bowsprit, with sword in hand and incense burning in his
hair.
Blackbeard would
plunder merchant ships, forcing them to allow his crew to board
their ship. The pirates would seize all of the valuables, food,
liquor, and weapons. Ironically, despite his ferocious reputation,
there are no verified accounts of him actually killing anyone.
He generally prevailed by fear alone.
