All goods imported into the UK from
the US, including
goods bought over the internet, are subject to:
1. Import Duty or Import Tax
Import Duty as of Dec. 2017 on gold jewelry
is 2.5% and is based on the declared value of the goods, PLUS
the transport costs to the country of destination.
2. Value Added Tax (VAT)
Value Added Tax (VAT) as of Dec. 2017 on gold jewelry is 20%,
plus the 2.5% Import Tax. The value for VAT purposes is therefore
the declared value of the goods, PLUS the transport costs
to the country of destination, PLUS the Import Duty.
3. Customs Clearance Fees
Customs Clearance Fees U.K.: Remember that your carrier or import
agent (including Royal Mail or Parcel Force) may also charge
you fees to clear your products through customs. These range
from about £4.00 (Royal Mail) to about £8.00 (Parcel
Force) and should be added after the above taxes.
The person receiving the shipment is legally obliged to pay Import Duty and VAT and
any customs clearance fees.
NOTE: The rate of Value Added Tax is not the
same in all member states of the European Union. It is at present
allowed to vary quite widely, ranging from about 15% to about
25%.
